Apaches Fall to #1 Iowa Western in Pool Play Opener

Wichita, KS – #8 Women's Soccer opened their pool play with a tough match against the #1 seed, Iowa Western. The Apaches were eager to face the top-ranked team to set the tone for the tournament.

The Apaches came out strong, playing with intensity and aggression. However, the Reivers quickly gained the upper hand, scoring in the 12th minute. Honoka Nohara and Hinami Ogushi provided the assists to Iowa Western's offensive star, Oruha Hayashi, who found the back of the net.

Hayashi, ranked third in Division I in points and fifth in goals, was a known threat coming into the game. Averaging 18 goals per season, with 1.28 goals per game and 3.56 points per game, she is one of the most dangerous offensive players in the nation.

The Apaches had several chances to equalize, but Iowa Western goalkeeper Alice Russell was solid in net, turning away their attempts.

Despite the early setback, the Apaches remained resilient, continuing to fight for possession and pressing forward offensively as Iowa Western maintained their attack. Goalie Saki Tsuchiya made several key saves to keep the Apaches in the game. One particularly impressive moment came when Tsuchiya made a diving save, and though the rebound was still in play, defender Katja van der Post cleared the danger. Tsuchiya would later make another crucial stop, tipping a shot that deflected off the post. These critical defensive plays allowed the Apaches to stay within striking distance, trailing 1-0 at halftime.

The Apaches came out of halftime with renewed energy and determination. In the 68th minute, their persistence paid off. Miki Hayashi unleashed a powerful shot from outside the box, perfectly placing the ball in the top right corner of the net. Iowa Western's goalkeeper seemed caught off guard, unable to react in time as the ball flew into the goal, leveling the score at 1-1.

In the 73rd minute, Iowa Western launched another counterattack, leading to a dramatic moment when defender Gabby Sabioa made a perfectly timed slide tackle to stop a Reiver shot. However, the tackle resulted in a corner kick for Iowa Western, which they capitalized on. The Reivers placed a well-executed ball into the box, where Oruha Hayashi leaped to head it in, giving Iowa Western a 2-1 lead.

Despite continued pressure from the Apaches and a few more scoring opportunities, they were unable to find the equalizer. As the clock wound down, the Apaches couldn't score again, and the final whistle blew with Iowa Western securing the 2-1 victory.

However, it's not over yet for the Lady Apaches. They will continue their pool play with a match against Laramie County today at 11 a.m. In order to advance to the next round, the Apaches must win against Laramie County, and Laramie County must also defeat Iowa Western. If those results happen, the pool winner will be decided by goal differential.
