Cartwright and Leitz Win ITA Super Bowl

TJC's Kerrie Cartwright and Audrey Leitz won the doubles championship at the at the 2011 USTA/ITA National Small College Championships at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center in Mobile, Alabama. Their win marks the first time a women's JUCO representative has won the Super Bowl since 1997, when McLennan Community College's Tagifano Soonalole claimed the women's singles crown. The Super Bowl champions will now move on to the 2011 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, which will take place November 3-6 at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. In singles action, Kerrie Cartwright fell in the finals.

The final match of the day was also the quickest, finishing in just under an hour. Tyler Junior College's Kerrie Cartwright was eager to bounce back from her earlier loss in the women's singles final and earn the women's doubles championship. Cartwright and partner Audrey Leitz wasted no time to take a quick lead, finishing off the first set 6-1 against Oklahoma Christian's Hermon Brhane and Lucie Sipkova. Cartwright and Leitz broke to open the second set, and Brhane and Sipkova showed no signs of mounting a comeback. After the Oklahoma Christian duo held to make the score 2-1 in favor of Tyler, Cartwright and Leitz took the final four games of the match to win 6-1, 6-1.
The women's singles final was the first to get on court Sunday, and after the first few games were over, it appeared to be an even contest between Auburn-Montgomery's Ana Veselinovic and Tyler Junior College's Kerrie Cartwright. The first break of serve was earned by Cartwright, giving her a 3-2 lead, but Veselinovic broke back immediately in the next game. On Cartwright's next service game, Veselinovic stepped into a second serve return on break point, drilling it down the line to surge ahead 5-3. She held easily in the next game to take the first set. As the match wore on, the heavy groundstrokes of Veselinovic became too much to handle for Cartwright. Veselinovic broke to open the second set and ran away with the match, prevailing 6-3, 6-0.
