Former Apache, AJ Smith, Drafted to MLS
Charlottesville, VA – The TJC Apaches have another reason to celebrate, as another former player has been drafted into Major League Soccer (MLS). Forward Ato 'AJ' Smith Jr., hailing from Hoje Tasstup, Denmark, was selected by New York City FC as the 18th pick of the third round in the 2025 MLS SuperDraft.
Smith, who recently completed a standout season at the University of Virginia, made an immediate impact in NCAA competition. His goal against No. 9 Pitt secured a 2-0 victory in the ACC quarterfinals. In his first NCAA tournament appearance, Smith played a pivotal role, assisting and scoring the game-winning goal in a dramatic 2-1 comeback win over West Virginia.
During his time at TJC, Smith accumulated 18 goals, 6 assists, and 6 game-winning goals, including a crucial win against Eastern Florida State in the national finals in Wichita. His success at both the collegiate and professional levels is a testament to the talent that continues to come out of TJC's soccer program.
