Men's Soccer Wins Opening Round at Nationals

Tyler Junior College's drive for five is still alive.

The Apaches opened Monday's play in the NJCAA Men's Division I National Soccer Tournament with a 4-1 over fellow Texas team Hill College at Pat Hartley Field.

TJC (21-0) has a day off on Tuesday and will return to pool play on Wednesday in a 5:30 p.m. match with Trinidad State (Colorado).

Yazeed Matthews scored two goals for TJC, while Shaun Stocker and Mohammed Kamara added scores.The Apaches are seeking their fifth national championship. Previous titles were won in 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2014.

Assists were from Marcelo Da Silva Anton, Yudai Tashiro and Karmara.

Fabian Zuniga scored for the Rebels on an assist from Erick Saucedo.William Diaz and Robbie Johnson shared goalkeeping duties for the Apaches.

Hill plays at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday against Trinidad State.

In other games on Monday: Parkland (Illinois) downed San Jacinto-South, 2-1; Iowa Western blanked CCBC-Essex (Maryland), 2-0; and Monroe (New York) rolled over Southern Nevada, 9-2.

In the first game, Alex Zarco scored both goals for Parkland. Assists were from Johnny Pugh and Gesi Muharremi. Matt Sharman was in goal.

Ricardo Ramos scored for the Coyotes.

In Game 2, Joe Hood and Ali Ibrahim scored for Iowa Western. Mason Farnsworth and Kwesi Allen had assists, while Carlos Herrera got the clean sheet.

Game 3 was a high-scoring affair. Evan Finnegan had a hat trick for Monroe with Felipe Hideki, Ignacio Goya and Gabriel Machado each adding two goals.

Machado had four assists.

Raul Sanchez and Nathan Reyes had the goals for Southern Nevada.

Pool play continues on Tuesday with games at 10 a.m. - Cloud County (Kansas) vs. San Jacinto; 12:30 p.m. - Ancilla vs. CCBC-Essex (Maryland); 3 p.m. - Daytona State (Florida) vs. Southern Nevada; and 5:30 p.m. - Hill vs. Trinidad State.

Pool play is used to determine semifinalists. The semifinals are set for 3 and 5:30 p.m. on Friday with the winners advancing to Saturday's championship at 6 p.m.

A tournament pass is $40 (adults). Day passes are $10 (adults), $5 (seniors 65-plus), $3 (students with ID) and free (children under 14).
