Homeruns and High Stakes: TJC Tops Panola in Pivotal Series Opener

Conference Outlook Heats Up as Region XIV North Opens Wednesday Action
Tyler, TX — With Region XIV North conference play resuming this week, the postseason picture is as cloudy as ever—and Wednesday's results only added to the drama. Tyler Junior College (TJC) rallied late to defeat Panola College in a pivotal matchup that could carry major implications for postseason seeding.

Panola entered the game sitting second in the conference standings with a 14-11 record (.560 win percentage), just ahead of TJC's 15-13 mark (.536). Wednesday's comeback win not only helps the Apaches climb closer in the standings but also deals a significant blow to Panola's bid to solidify their runner-up spot heading into the final stretch.

Game 1 Recap: TJC 5, Panola 3

The Apaches struck first with a solo home run from Preston Newberry in the opening inning, but Panola answered quickly with a sacrifice fly in the bottom half to even the score. Panola then took control in the fifth, plating two runs on RBI singles by M. Novominsk and J. Arquette to make it 3-1.

TJC's offense, quiet through seven innings, came alive in the eighth. With two runners aboard, Landry Stamps launched a massive three-run homer to deep left, giving TJC a 4-3 lead. James Raecek followed up in the ninth with a solo blast to provide insurance, sealing the 5-3 victory.

Despite being outhit 8-6, TJC made their hits count, with all five runs coming via the long ball. The Apaches' power display included home runs from Newberry, Stamps, and Raecek.

Offensive Leaders:

On the Mound:

Starter Trevor Breaux gave TJC 4.2 innings, allowing three earned runs and striking out six. The bullpen was lights out, with four relievers combining for 4.1 shutout innings. Roman Tolbert picked up the win (3-1), and Chris Langley earned his sixth save of the season.

Standings Outlook:

The race for the fourth and final postseason remains tight. Paris Junior College, Northeast Texas, and Navarro are in a three-way tie with 12-13 records. Paris struck first in their series against Navarro, while Northeast dropped their opener against Angelina.

Each team has crucial matchups remaining:

  • Paris: Two games left vs. Navarro, then a three-game set vs. Panola

  • Navarro: Continues with Paris, then takes on Northeast

  • Northeast: Finishes Angelina series, then hosts Navarro

With so many head-to-heads left, the standings are guaranteed to shift. The Apaches' postseason hopes could hinge on this weekend's results across the board.

For now, the only certainty is that every pitch counts from here on out.
