LUFKIN, TX — TJC baseball hit the road for a Saturday doubleheader against Angelina and came away with a hard-fought split, dropping Game 1 by a score of 5-3 before bouncing back with an 8-7 victory in Game 2.
Game 1: Late Runs Push Angelina Past , 5-3
The Apaches showed flashes of offensive life in the middle innings but couldn't hold off a steady Angelina squad in the opener.
After falling behind 2-0 through three innings — including a run on a balk in the third — TJC responded in the fourth with a three-run surge. RBIs from Chase Fuentes, Zack Zavala, and Lathan Van Ausdall gave the Apaches a short-lived lead.
But Angelina answered back with runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth, including a key RBI double from J. Tanguma. Despite collecting eight hits, the Apaches couldn't scratch across any more runs in the final three frames.
Micah Roberts led the way offensively with a 2-for-4 performance. On the mound, Dane LeMaster (4-2) took the loss, giving up three earned runs in three innings of relief.
Game 2: TJC Survives Late Rally to Win Slugfest, 8-7
Game 2 was an all-out battle that featured 23 combined hits and 15 total runs. The Apaches' offense exploded for 15 hits, led by Preston Newberry (3-for-5, RBI), Lathan Van Ausdall (3-for-4, 2 RBI), and Sawyer Dunagan (2-for-4, 3 RBI).
After Angelina jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the second, TJC chipped away, tying the game in the sixth and surging ahead with a four-run inning. Dunagan delivered the big blow with a 2-RBI single that gave TJC an 8-5 lead.
Angelina mounted a comeback late, scoring in the eighth and again in the ninth, but Chris Langley shut the door in the final frame to earn his fourth save of the season.
Jonathan Greve (1-0) picked up the win in relief, pitching 1.2 scoreless innings. TJC used six pitchers in the game, who combined for 8 strikeouts and allowed 12 walks.
