The Tyler Junior College Apaches lost a late lead to Bossier Parish Community College and lost, 7-5, Monday night at Mike Carter Field.

The Apaches (26-14) had a 4-2 lead going into the eighth inning, but lost the lead twice in the final two frames.

"We just didn't get the zeroes when we needed to," Apaches head coach Doug Wren said. "For seven innings of that ballgame we played pretty good baseball and made things happen, and we had a chance to close this game out and we didn't. I'll tell these guys, 'You have to be ready when your opportunity comes up.'"

The Cavaliers (14-26) scored first, when Jeff Kosta led off the top of the fourth with a stand-up double to the center field wall. With two outs, catcher Tyler Guerrero belted a double to center field, scoring Kosta. The next batter, third baseman Logan Moore, hit an RBI triple off the center field wall for a two run lead, 2-0.

Tyler struck back in the bottom of the inning with a lead-off double from designated hitter Estevan Hernandez followed by a drag bunt single for second baseman Tyler Ernest. Jacob Soisson hit an infield grounder scoring Ernest, followed by a RBI double from Ron Reemts that hit the left-field foul line paint. The game was tied 2-2 after four innings.

In the fifth, Apaches right fielder Taylor Drolette hit a one-out double off the top of the left-field wall.

Jon McManemin reached on an error from the BPCC second baseman, and Hernandez scored Drolette with a sacrifice fly to right field. McManemin also came in on a wild pitch, and Tyler took a 4-2 lead.

The lead held until the eighth, when Tyler lost the lead on a single swing of the bat. BPCC led off with a pair of singles, and loaded the bases with one out. Zac Howell then laced one to right that scored two, with another run coming in from third when Tyler tried to throw out Howell taking second. BPCC led 5-4 at that point.

Tyler rallied in the bottom of the inning, with a pair of one-out walks. The Apaches had two away and runners at the corners when relief pitcher Lance Phillips balked in the tying run.

In the top of the ninth, the Cavaliers started off with a walk and a single, then a two-RBI single to center field from first baseman Jason Tuggle gave BPCC a 7-5 lead. The Apaches went in order in the bottom of the ninth.
Freshman Eythan Lenz got the start on the mound for the Apaches, going four innings and striking out three, with five hits and two runs allowed. Kyle Sargent pitched a scoreless fifth inning, and Blaine Taylor faced two batters in the sixth, allowing a walk that was erased on a double play after a diving catch of a line drive by McManemin.
Nick Johnson got a one-pitch out to close the sixth, and pitched into the eighth, but left with two runners on, both of whom came in to score. Zach Aitken relieved Johnson in the eighth and gave up the lead, then Blaine Hashagen pitched the ninth and took the loss.
Ernest went 2 for 4 for Tyler with a run scored, while Reemts was 1 for 2 with an RBI and a run. Estevan Hernandez was 1 for 4 with an RBI and a run.
Tyler is in action this weekend at Louisiana State University-Eunice, which is No. 1 in the NJCAA Division II rankings. TJC plays there Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
