Men's Tennis Nationals: #1 Apaches advance in 5 of 6 semi-finals, Finals Friday

With rain smothering the North Texas area, the tennis had to move inside to McKinney for the semi-finals of the National Championship tournament.  The Tyler Junior College men won 5 of 6 singles semi-final matches on Thursday.  The doubles matches were postponed. 

The day 3 point totals point towards an exciting Finals Friday with three teams within 2 points of one another.  Cowley College leads with 36 points, Tyler is just one point behind at 35 and Eastern Florida State is in third with 34 points.  The Apaches match up head to head with those two colleges in all five finals matches.   Doubles semi-finals and finals will be completed on Friday.  The Apaches still have two flights in contention in the three doubles draws.  

Singles   

Juan Carlos Garcia [2] defeated Bruno Nhavene [3]   from Cowley College, 6-2, 6-2, in Flight 1. Garcia, the #2 seed will face  Hugo Car the #1 seed from Eastern Florida State in the Finals.    

Samer Al Tori [3] fell to Reiya Komagata [2] from Cowley College, 6-17-6(3), in Flight 2.   

Alex Despoja [1] defeated  Cem Atlamis [4]   from Seward County Community College, 6-2, 6-1 in Flight 3.  Despoja, the #1 seed will face  Nick Devivo the #2 seed from Eastern Florida State in the Finals.  

Dan Persson [2] defeated Pedro De La Riva [3]  from Cowley  College, 6-3, 6-3 in Flight 4.  Persson, the #2 seed will face Tomas Quesada Perez, from Eastern Florida State the #1 seed in the Finals.    

Faiz Nasyam [1] defeated Luke Stula Takumi [5] from Collin College, 6-0, 6-2, in Flight 5.  Nasyam, the #1 seed will face  Tadeo Gaggiofatto [2] from Cowley College, the #2 seed in the Finals.  

Daniel Borisov [1] defeated  Alexandr Achour [4] , from Eastern Florida State, 7-6(4), 6-1 in Flight 6.  Borisov, the #1 seed will face  Alejandro Gonzalez [2]  from Cowley College, the #2 seed in the Finals.  

Doubles

Due to the weather, the doubles matches were postponed until Friday.  The Apaches have two flights of doubles matches Doni Gashi [2] Dan Persson in Flght 2, and  Samer Al Tori [4] Calvin Golmei in Flight 3. 

National Championship play continues Friday and the Apaches will participate in 2 doubles semi-finals and 5 singles final matches.  All draws are scheduled to be played in Plano, Texas.  

*UPDATE FOR FRI 5/17: Main draw singles finals will be played at 8am. Main draw doubles semifinals will be played at 11am. Main draw doubles finals will be played at 2pm. Consolation singles will be played at 8 and 9am, consolation doubles will be played at 10 and 11am.

Plano, TX – The top teams from the NJCAA Division I Men's ranks will meet in Plano, Texas this week for the playing of the 2024 NJCAA Men's Team Championships.

With play beginning today, Monday, May 13th, the NJCAA Team Championships feature numerous flights of play in which individual players can earn points towards their teams total, and the team with the most points at the end of the championships will be crowned NJCAA National Champions.

In 2023, Cowley College was crowned NJCAA National Champions for the first time in program history. Cowley narrowly edged Tyler Junior College, Eastern Florida State College, and Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College to take home the title.

Entering the weekend, Tyler (1), Cowley (2), Eastern Florida State (3), Barton (4), and Seward (5) are ranked as the top five teams in the Apr. 19 ITA National Team Rankings.
