TUCSON, Ariz. – Tyler Junior College (Texas) claimed their fourth straight NJCAA Division I Women's Tennis national championship Thursday at the Jim Reffkin Tennis Center. Finishing with a total of 46 points, the Apaches clinched their 17th title in program history by narrowly edging out ASA College (N.Y.) who finished with 42.5 points.
The ASA Avengers joined Georgia Perimeter College in claiming two singles championships, while Tyler and Florida State-Jacksonville each earned one. It was Florida State-Jacksonville sophomore Esther Zuniga taking the No. 1 singles crown with a 0-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Tyler freshman Fausthyara Pietersz. In No. 2 singles, Georgia Perimeter freshman Fatyha Berjan earned a 6-2, 6-2 win over Tyler sophomore Nelo Phiri. Georgia Perimeter sophomore Ida Amen defeated Tyler sophomore Alejandra Enderica 7-6, 6-2 in No. 3 singles.
The number one ranked Tyler Junior College tennis teams won the Region XIV Tournament on Saturday, defeating Laredo Community College on the John E. Peterson Courts at the JoAnn Medlock Murphy Tennis Center. The Apache Ladies won 9-0 to improve to 13-5 on the season. Their next action is May 5-10 at the NJCAA National Tennis Tournament in Tucson, Arizona. The Apaches won 8-1 to up their record to 17-6. The men will compete in the national tournament May 13-17 in Plano.

"Tennis is fun; and we learned about rules today," the Caldwell Elementary School second-grader continued.
The TJC men's and women's tennis teams will host Jacksonville College and Laredo College in the Region XIV tournament at the JoAnn Murphy Medlock tennis center on the TJC campus. On Friday, the TJC men and women will take on Jacksonville at 11am. Jacksonville will then play Laredo at 3pm. On Saturday, Laredo and TJC will play at 9am. All matches will be played at the John E Peterson tennis courts and the Brookshire Family Tennis Courts.
The top-ranked Tyler Junior College men and women captured the team championships in dominant fashion Saturday to close out the 16th annual Southwest JUCO Championships.
The Tyler men and women compiled 63 points apiece for comfortable wins over runner-up Collin, with the Apaches prevailing by 13 points at Tranum Tennis Center and the Lady Apaches by 11 at the Temple High School courts. The Laredo men were third with 27 points and TC tallied 25. Following Tyler and Collin in the women's field were North Central Texas with 41 points, Temple with 30, Seminole State (Okla.) with 16 and Laredo with 12.
SKILLMAN, NJ (Mar. 1) -- The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced today the 2013 inductees for the ITA Men's Collegiate Tennis Hall of Fame. The 2013 class consists of seven inductees: Coaches - Bobby Bayliss (University of Notre Dame), Dennis Emery (University of Kentucky), and John Peterson (Tyler Junior College); Players - Paul Goldstein (Stanford University), Kelly Jones (Pepperdine University), and Harold Solomon (Rice University); and Contributor - Alan Schwartz (Yale University). The 2013 honorees will be inducted at the 2013 ITA Men's Collegiate Hall of Fame Enshrinement Banquet, which will be held on May 22 during the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Tennis Championships at the University of Illinois in Champaign, IL.
