TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Tyler Junior College women's tennis team won all nine of its matches Monday to remain undefeated in the NJCAA Division I national tournament.
The Apache Ladies, who also won their only two matches Sunday, have 27 points while second-place Lee College of Baytown has 25 points. Hillsborough (Fla.) is next with 22.5 points, followed by Collin County with 21.
TJC's closest match Monday came at No. 5 singles where Robert E. Lee graduate Casey Bulls won 6-4, 6-1. The top-seeded Bulls defeated Taylor Holzknecht of Collin County.
In the other singles results, Mariya Slupska has posted wins of 6-2, 6-2 and 6-0, 6-0 at Flight 1; Sun Wen won 6-1, 6-1; Antonia Kolovou won 6-2, 6-1; Brook Dennis rolled 6-1, 6-0; and Julie Bell advanced 6-1, 6-0. The only non-No. 1 seed for TJC is No. 2 Slupska in Flight 1.
In doubles, Slupska and Dennis have a pair of 6-1, 6-0 victories in Flight 1, followed by Wen and Kolovou (6-2, 6-0) and Anna Zurek and Hagar Caro (6-0, 6-0).
Action will continue today with quarterfinal matches.
In other TJC news, the Apache baseball team will play at 6 p.m. Friday against Eastfield in the first round of the District C Tournament in McKinney. The Apaches are seeded fourth and Eastfield is No. 1.
The first game will feature No. 2 Cedar Valley against No. 3 Richland at 3 p.m.
The three-day tournament is double-elimination. The event will take place on Gabe Nesbitt Field at The Ballfields at Craig Ranch.
