Montana State shored up its depth at linebacker on Thursday, adding transfer Roger Trammell from Tyler (Tex.) Junior College.
Trammel brings experience and explosiveness to the Bobcat program, according to MSU linebackers coach Kane Ioane. "Roger fits the mold of the type of linebacker we're looking for in our program," Ioane said. "He has good size and great athletic ability. He plays sideline to sideline. He's physical enough to play inside the box, and athletic enough to play in space, and he really fits our group personality-wise."
The 6-1, 230 Lewisville, Tex., product earned all-state and district defensive player of the year honors during his senior season at Lewisville, registering 98 tackles and eight sacks. Trammell also earned all-conference honorable mention honors at Tyler Junior College last fall, recording 47 tackles, including 3.5 for a loss, with 2.5 sacks. He recovered a league-high four fumbles.
"I looked at a bunch of (FCS) programs and I really liked Montana State," Trammell said. "I think it's a great program that is ready to compete."
Ioane said the addition of Trammell, who he said enters the fall in competition for starting honors at the Sam linebacker spot with Tanner Ripley and Aleksei Grosulak, brings order to the MSU linebacker corps. "This allows us to keep Jody Owens at the Will (linebacker spot), where he had a great spring. (Trammell) won't be given anything, he'll compete with Tanner and Aleksei, but he gives us good depth at the Sam position."
Trammell's abilities were on display during TJC's 47-20 win over Arkansas Baptist. When he recorded 14 total tackles, three for a loss, with 1.5 sacks.
