TYLER - Latika Smith scored from close in with 11 seconds to play and the Tyler Apache Ladies held on to defeat the Angelina Lady ‘Runners 76-75 on Sunday in the semifinals of the women's Region XIV basketball tournament.
Tyler (24-8) advances to the championship game Monday night against No. 1 seed Trinity Valley (27-5) with a trip to the national junior college tournament March 16-20 in Salina, Kan., at stake.
Katelyn Bernsen led Tyler with 15 points. Ervette Powell added 13 points and 8 rebounds, and Britney Joseph had 10 points and 9 rebounds.
Angelina's Tyeka Ranton led all scorers with 22 points and 11 rebounds, and Donia Naylor had 17 points and 10 rebounds.
The game was tied 67-67 with three minutes to play, when Ranton got trapped by two Tyler defenders. She threw wildly out of the confusion right into the hands of a Tyler player, who fed Bernsen, who was running downcourt for an easy basket that gave Tyler the lead.
Marcy Robinson tied the game again at 69-all with two free throws, but CeMonay Newell answered with a 3-pointer for a 72-69 Tyler lead with 1:58 to play.
Robinson was then fouled on a 3-point shot and made two of her free throws to cut Tyler's lead to 72-71, but Smith scored on a lay-up to put the Apache Ladies ahead 74-71 at 1:22.
Ten seconds later, Robinson scored to bring Angelina to 74-73, and the Lady ‘Runners got the ball back with 42 seconds to play on a 30-second shot clock violation against Tyler.
Ranton hit a jump shot with 26 seconds to play to put Angelina back into the lead, 75-74, but Smith drove down the left side of the lane and put up a left-handed shot that fell in with 11 seconds to play.
Angelina rushed the ball down court and got three shots off, but none of them went in, and the buzzer sounded on Tyler's one-point victory.
Angelina lost despite hitting 51.9 percent of its field goal attempts (28 of 54) to 35.7 percent (25 of 70) for Tyler. The Apache Ladies hit 7 of 24 from three-point range, while Angelina was just 3 of 10.
