Avenging their only two losses of the season, the Tyler Junior College Apaches swept Bossier Parish Community College, 4-3 and 13-3, Monday in a baseball doubleheader at Mike Carter Field.
The Apaches (11-2) stretched their winning streak to 11 games.
"We're excited about today's wins, especially coming against a good (Division I) team in Bossier Parish," said first-year TJC head coach Doug Wren. "To the guys' credit, they continue to go out and compete every out of every inning."
TJC clinched the sweep with a run-rule victory in Game 2 as the Apaches had 16 hits.
"Our offense continues to score runs early and our pitching has continued to give us good solid outings," Wren said. "It's good to see the guys beginning to gain some confidence in their abilities and play with a swagger."
The first game turned into a nail-biter, despite the Apaches grabbing a 3-0 lead in the first inning. They scored only one more run the rest of the game while Bossier scored once in the fourth and twice in the top of the seventh to draw within 4-3. Reliever Stephen Greenwood was able to record all three outs in the seventh for his second save.
Matt Sheppard, a freshman from Humble, improved to 3-0 with one run allowed in 5 1-3 innings. He struck out five.
The Apaches took charge of Game 2 by scoring nine runs over the fifth and sixth innings to make it 12-3.
Kris Martinez had the big hit in the fifth with a two-run double, highlighting a five-run outburst.
TJC added four more runs in the sixth as it took advantage of Bossier mistakes. Tanner Smith scored on a passed ball and Thomas Dougherty was credited with an RBI by getting hit by a pitch. Conn McWilliams had an RBI single.
Starting pitcher Derek Bowen (2-0), a sophomore from White Oak, earned the win by working five innings.
TJC's leading hitters were Matt Adams (3-for-4, two RBIs) and Josh Salmon (3-for-4, three RBIs).
