San Jose State senior guard Chasity Shavers has been named the Verizon Wireless Western Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the week of Dec. 7-13. This is the first WAC Player of the Week honor ever for Shavers.The Lewisville, Texas, native scored a career-high 32 points on 58 percent shooting and tied a career-high with eight rebounds in the Spartans' monumental 68-66 road win over No. 22 California. With San Jose State trailing 25-13, Shavers scored 13 of the Spartans' next 17 points to tie the game at 30 with 3:59 left in the first half. She scored 17 points in the first half as San Jose State overcame a 13-point first-half deficit and took a 39-36 lead into the locker room at halftime. Shavers then made four straight free throws midway through the second half to put San Jose State ahead for good and converted three more free throws in the final 34 seconds to ensure the victory. Shavers' 32 points are the most scored by a San Jose State player in a game since the 2005 season, the win was the first over a ranked team since 1983 and it snapped an 18-game losing streak to the Bears.
Other nominees included: Jessica Van Hoogen of Boise State averaged 21.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 4.5 steals as the Broncos went 1-1 on the week … Fresno State's Jaleesa Ross averaged 15.0 points and 3.5 assists as the Bulldogs went 2-0 on the week … Shaena-Lyn Kuehu of Idaho averaged 12.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals in a pair of games … Louisiana Tech's Adrienne Johnson averaged 17.5 points and 8.5 rebounds a game while shooting 54 percent from the field and 70 percent from the free throw line as the Techsters went 1-1 on the week … Jasmine Lowe of New Mexico State finished with 19 points, five rebounds and five assists in a win over North Dakota State … Utah State's LaCale Pringle-Buchanan scored 14 points and added five rebounds, one assist and one steal in just 23 minutes in the Aggies' loss to Idaho State.
