The Tyler Junior College men's soccer team may not have beat the traffic early Thursday morning, but the Apaches did manage to get the best of their opponent in the first round of the NJCAA Division I national tournament.
Despite getting stuck in traffic and arriving to the field just 25 minutes before the match, No. 1 TJC started fast with two goals in the opening nine minutes en route to a 5-1 victory over Iowa Central at Mercer County Community College in West Windsor, N.J.
Making their first appearance at the national tournament since 1998, the Apaches (19-0) asserted control early with goals by Andy Brooks in the eighth minute and Dom Dwyer in the ninth minute.
After George Curry scored off a header to cut Iowa Central's deficit in the first half in the 38th minute, the Apaches got their two-goal cushion back to 3-1 when Shaunovan Wilson converted a penalty shot in the 43rd minute.
Dwyer added his second goal in the second half and Wilson completed the scoring on a second penalty shot.
The official tournament stats had TJC dominating in overall shots, 17-4. According to TJC, the Apaches had a 10-2 advantage in shots on goal. The Apaches controlled the corner kicks, 7-1.
Apaches head coach Steve Clements still saw plenty of room for improvement before taking on fifth-seeded Louisburg (N.C.), which defeated two-time defending national champion Yavapai (Ariz.) 3-1.
TJC will play Louisburg (18-2-1) at 1:30 p.m. today in the semifinals.
"I thought it was kind of sloppy," Clements said of TJC's performance. "We were a little rusty looking. We were sharp on the attack in the very beginning -- a lot of one-touch, two-touch and getting the ball around.
"We kind of sat on the 2-0 lead. We did not keep pressing like I thought we needed to. They were able to get a set piece and make it 2-1. At halftime we regrouped and pushed them a little bit."
With the Apaches' next game in the afternoon, they aren't expecting any further traffic delays. The only rushing they plan on doing is during the match.
