Sophomore shooter CeMonay Newell made four 3-pointers and scored 18 points to help Tyler Junior College nudge past New Mexico JC, 80-70, Thursday night at Wagstaff Gymnasium.

In the third game of the TJC Classic, the Apache Ladies capitalized on 37 Thunderbird turnovers that included 12 steals.

The Apache Ladies (3-0) shot 44 percent, bolstered by Newell converting half of her shots.

Sophomore post Jasmine King contributed 14 points and six rebounds in the win, and redshirt freshman Britney Joseph managed 10 points and six rebounds despite sitting 10 minutes of the second half with four fouls.

TJC never trailed after taking the lead with 4:28 left in the first half, but the Apache Ladies never were able to coast. Their first double-figure lead came with 6:20 remaining, and 12 was the biggest margin with 30 seconds left.

"It was one of those games where it seemed like nothing would work," said TJC head coach Trenia Jones. "We were just playing on sheer will. They were running their sets ΓΆΒ?Β» they set a bunch of picks. We were having to communicate on those picks and every time we would have a let-up they would score off it."

Sophomore guard Samantha O'Shields was a thorn in TJC's side in the first half with three straight 3-pointers to stake New Mexico to an early eight-point lead. She finished with 15 points, but only two in the second half.

"We just had some little successes here and there, and it was those little successes that won us the ballgame," said Jones, whose team shot 28 free throws to New Mexico's 10.

In other action, Collin County throttled Lon Morris 90-69, and Kilgore topped Ranger 67-53.

Eleven different players scored for Collin County, led by sophomore guard Taylor Murray's 20 points. Collin led 50-25 at halftime.

Tangeka Payne, a 5-5 freshman, sparked the Kilgore win with 17 points. She made 9 of 11 free throws.
