Eventually, the Apaches' free-throw shooting overcame McCook Community College's 3-point shooting.

Tyler Junior College converted 17 of 19 free throws in the second half, and scored the game's final nine points, to register an 82-78 victory Saturday at Wagstaff Gymnasium.

The Apache Ladies put 13 different players in the scoring column in a 74-55 win over Ranger in the final game of the three-day TJC Classic.

Men
The Nebraska school gave the Apaches fits by sinking eight 3-pointers in the first half -- when the Indians built a 10-point lead -- and 14 overall.

After trailing for 10 consecutive minutes of the second half, TJC (4-1) went on top to stay on Kyle Ford's 3-pointer from the right corner. It was the former Whitehouse standout's only field goal of the game.

McCook, meanwhile, went scoreless over the final 1:22 after leading 78-73.

Point guard Mitch Marquis hit both of his free throws to put the Apaches up by three with 14.8 seconds left.

Andrew Hanson missed a 3-pointer for McCook on the next possession and Byron Maxson got the rebound and was fouled. His free throw made it a two-possession game to ice the victory.

Three returning sophomores and a highly recruited freshman led the Apaches in points. Maxson hit for 19 points, followed by Labree Sledge with 18, Johnathan Edwards with 17, and freshman Malcolm Moore with 12 points and eight rebounds.

TJC finished the game 25-of-30 from the foul line.

"We are excited about the way we shot free throws," said TJC head coach Mike Marquis. "We worked pretty diligently. We had been 50 percent or worse. We changed our approach and got in (the gym) and shot a few more. I was really proud of the kids for the way they stepped up."

Women
One day after scoring 103 points in a loss to Collin County, the Apache Ladies struggled against Ranger despite never being too threatened.

TJC made five of its first 22 shots while Ranger made only five of 21. The game was tied 14-14 before the Apache Ladies took the lead for good on Nakia Ollison's bucket.

Sophomore Asia Williams was TJC's leading scorer, but with only 12 points.
