Coach Groth on Game:
"... Brandyn Greer gave another gutsy performance after a week off...it was a back and forth contest and Greer gave us all he had for 6 innings...Immel performed well in relief...we played fairly solid defense, other than a few misguided pickoffs...we lost starting SS Ryan Willnow when a routine ground ball took a bad hop and hit him in the nose...Willnow was taken to the hospital after the game to diagnose how bad the injury was...Jerrod Spillers replaced Willnow...."
"...our offense was scrappy at times, but we never really broke through with a big inning...that's in part due to their pitcher, who pitched well and gave Richland a good chance to win...we had a couple of chances to score more with bases loaded but couldn't quite break through...Tyler Pirtle crushed a two out pitch in the 7th that appeared to be headed for the right center gap, but the wind held it up just enough for the centerfielder to run it down...that would have meant 3 runs at a key spot in the game ... he came up again in the 9th with the bases loaded and coaxed a walk to get their lead to one with two outs ...the game ended with the bases loaded with a lot of drama, if we get a hit there, we take a lead to the bottom of the 9th...tomorrow looks to be another competitive doubleheader between #1 and #3 in the Nation...."
Coach Groth on Series:
"...we had the people we wanted up, at bat in key spots, and their pitcher did just enough to keep us off the board enough to win this game ..."
"...Willnow will not likely play tomorrow, which will mean Jerrod Spillers will fill in at short stop tomorrow...we'll look for Drew Johnson and Peyton Parsons to give us a lift on the mound in hopes of a Saturday sweep...that's exactly what we did against Richland the first round, they got the first game on Friday, and we got two on Saturday...today's games had a playoff atmosphere and we're anxious to get back at it tomorrow..."
