LAREDO -- The top-ranked Tyler Junior College women's tennis team repeated as Region XIV champion by beating No. 3 Lee, 5-4, Friday.
The Apache Ladies beat Lee all three times this season, all by 5-4.

TJC trailed 2-1 after the doubles and lost at Nos. 1 and 2 singles. But the Apache Ladies were strong at the bottom of the lineup with four wins.

Hagar Caro, a freshman from Israel, clinched the match at No. 4 with a 6-0, 7-6 victory.

Robert E. Lee graduate Casey Bulls won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 in what TJC head coach John Peterson called her best singles match of the season.

Also winning for TJC in singles were Sureena Weir at No. 3 (7-5, 6-0) and Madelyn Lumpkin at No. 6 (6-2, 6-2).

"We finished second to Lee at the Southwest Juco (tournament) last week, so it was important for us to get this regional title," Peterson said.

Laredo captured the men's regional championship with a 6-3 win over the Apaches.

Laredo won two of three doubles matches -- TJC prevailed at No. 3, 8-6, with Mwalimu Phiri and Paolo Roessle.

The Apaches managed singles wins at No. 5 with Nathan Robinson (2-6, 6-2, 6-2) and No. 6 with Phiri (4-6, 6-4, 6-2). TJC lost a tough match at Flight 4, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

"We obviously had a chance at four, and three was a close match," Peterson said. "That was one break both times. (Flight) One doubles was a close match.

"They were better on their home courts. They played well."
