This was eerily similar to last year's home game against Trinity Valley, only this time the Apache Ladies won despite blowing a 16-point lead in the second half.

The Lady Cardinals went on a 22-6 run in less than seven minutes to go from trailing 66-50 to being tied 72-72 with 1:26 left in regulation.

After the teams traded 3-pointers, TJC took the lead for good on a tremendous putback jumper by 6-6 sophomore April Murphy, who finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Trinity Valley then turned the ball over on the inbounds pass with 21.1 seconds left, and freshman point guard Kelly Stewart made two free throws in the 1-and-1 to make it 79-75 with 13 seconds to play.

The Apache Ladies (8-1, 1-0) avoided disaster with a tenth of a second left when Zane Zeltina drew a foul on a missed 3-point attempt.

The flashy Stewart scored a team-high 17 points and was 5-for-6 at the free throw line.

TJC had two more players in double figures with Chasity Shavers' 13 points and Monica Spearman's 11.

The Apache Ladies were dominant at times. They scored the first 11 points of the game while Trinity Valley missed its first eight shots.

TJC led by as many as 16 in the first half and achieved that figure six more times in the second half.

However, turnovers were almost TJC's undoing as the Apache Ladies had 16 giveaways in the second half to help the Lady Cardinals (4-4, 0-1) climb back in the game.
