DALLAS - It took two days for Tyler Junior College (4-0) to claim its first trophy of the season as the Apache Ladies swept Brookhaven and Western Texas Saturday to win the Brookhaven Tournament.
TJC beat Western Texas 3-0 (30-21, 30-23, 30-22) before taking care of host Brookhaven 3-0 (30-17, 30-11, 30-13) to win the tournament.
TJC head coach Dana Hatch said it was a perfect way to start the season.
"We kind of got booted out of a tournament we were in last year (because it included conference teams), and luckily I was able to get us in this tournament," Hatch said.
"We really felt we'd do well. We have a lot of depth and I was able to play everybody and look at different combinations and positions."
Dalia Serra quarterbacked TJC in both match wins, totaling 27 assists in the win over Western Texas and 37 assists in the victory over Brookhaven.
Leticia Kuhn combined for 24 kills in the two matches, registering 16 digs alone in the win over Brookhaven. Naomi Mayes had eight kills and two blocks against Western Texas and Pam Arterberry had eight kills and two blocks in the win over Brookhaven.
Freshman Brittany Simples made an impact, posting 11 solo blocks and seven kills in the wins.
TJC will next face Temple Junior College at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Temple.
