SALINA, Kan. - The Tyler Junior College Apache Ladies may not be good enough to win a national title, but they sure know how to get their money's worth in Kansas.
The Apache Ladies secured another long stay at the NJCAA Division I Women's Tournament by beating Wyoming's Casper College, 80-59, Wednesday in the consolation quarterfinals at the Bicentennial Center.
Tyler (27-7) won't play again until noon Friday against either Shelton State (Ala.) or Walters State (Tenn.), who meet at 10 a.m. Thursday in an elimination game.
The Apache Ladies lasted until the final day in two previous trips to Salina under head coach Trenia Jones, finishing fifth in 2001 and seventh in 2003.
Eliminating Casper (26-9), coming off a four-point loss to fourth-ranked Odessa, was a difficult job. It took a late 12-1 run to finally put the Lady Thunderbirds away.
"They play as hard as any team we've seen," said Jones, after Tyler scored 36 points off 25 Casper turnovers and shot 49 percent from the field. "They're not going to give up, their coach is not going to give up, and their fans aren't going to give up.
"We hated having to meet them this early, even in the loser's bracket."
After trailing by as much as 15 in the first half, Casper clawed its way back and actually led for 2 minutes, 8 seconds, and by as much as three with 14:55 left in the game.
The Apache Ladies responded by scoring on three of their next four possessions and taking back the lead for good.
Still, the game remained close until the 7:30 mark when Jamia Malone swished a 3-pointer and Tyler outscored Casper 12-1 in less than two minutes to go up 67-50. Malone added to the run with a steal, leading to a bucket by Krystal Van Hook, who also converted off a fast break.
The Apache Ladies played their best when they played fast.
"We went back to running," Jones said. "We were running against them at the beginning of the game and we got a lot of baskets just off our transition. Then we got a little tired, and Yoshica (Spears) has got a touch of the flu.
"When we got winded, we stopped running. In the second half when we started running again we were able to convert and tire their legs out a little more. That stopped some of those 3-point shots."
Tyler made the decisive run with only seven players available after Shavers suffered a knee injury chasing after a loose ball with 8:43 left. She was able to walk after the game and had ice on the knee.
In the first half, the Apache Ladies discovered what Odessa already knew. Casper was a hard team to shake.
Tyler trailed by one before going on a 13-1 run to claim its first double-digit lead at the 11:22 mark.
Casper, which missed 12 of its first 13 shots, scored three straight buckets in the paint to cut an 11-point deficit to five.
April Murphy, a 6-6 freshman post, ignited a 10-0 run for Tyler by scoring on a free throw, a putback, a turnaround jumper and a bank shot to give the Apache Ladies a 25-10 lead with 7:50 to play in the half. Murphy ended up with 21 points, eight rebounds and two blocks.
Back came Casper in a big way, scoring 16 of the next 18 points to pull within one at the 3:00 mark.
Spears, a freshman, hit a big 3-pointer to counter the Casper run, but Kylee Rinehart scored off an inbounds pass to make it 30-28.
After that, the Lady T-Birds had the ball on four straight possessions with a chance to tie or take the lead, but each one ended with a turnover.
