The Division I No. 3 ranked Tyler Junior College Apache Ladies opened their soccer season with a 3-2 win over Brookhaven, the No. 3 team in Division III, on Friday at Pat Hartley Field.


TJC's Katelyn Renfro, a 5-5 freshman forward from Kilgore, scored the first goal of the season on an assist from Hitomi Konno, a 5-3 freshman midfielder from Kanagawa, Japan.

After a goal from the Bears, Konno had another assist, this time on Itzayanna Sanchez-Gracia's goal for a 2-1 advantage. Sanchez-Garcia is a 5-5 midfielder from Tijuana, Mexico.

The Apache Ladies took a 2-1 halftime lead.

TJC went up 3-1 when Julia Trabach, a 5-4 freshman from Vila Velha, Brazil. The Bears added a late goal.

On Saturday, the TJC men's team, the defending national champions and ranked No. 1 entering the season, takes on Mississippi Gulf Coast at 7 p.m. At 4 p.m., the Navarro Lady Bulldogs will meet No. 6 Iowa Western.

On Sunday, the Apache Ladies and Iowa Western will play at 5 p.m.

All the games are set for Pat Hartley Field on the TJC campus.
