TUCSON, Ariz. - The No. 1-ranked Apache Ladies got off to a good start in their quest for a national tennis championship, going unbeaten on Monday at the Reffkin Tennis Center.

Along with Tyler Junior College, defending national champion ASA Miami was also unbeaten. The two powerhouses lead the NJCAA Division I Women's National Tournament with 27 points.


They are followed by Seward County (Kansas) (24.5), St. Petersburg (Florida) (24.5), Seminole State (Oklahoma) (23.5), Broward County (Kansas) (22.5) and Mesa (Arizona) (22).


The TJC singles players taking wins were:

Flight 1: freshman Jasmine Asghar def. Ana Orozco, North Central Texas, 6-1, 6-0;

Flight 2: freshman Kalani Soli def. Augustina Grimolizzi, North Central Texas, 6-1, 6-2;


Flight 4: freshman Oceane Garibal def. Maria Garduno, Cowley County, 6-0, 6-1;

Flight 5: freshman Yuna Ito def. Jenna Groene, Barton County (Kansas), 6-1, 6-1;

Flight 6: sophomore Elena Tendero def. Anna Ballard, Lewis & Clark (Illinois), 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles TJC went 3-0:

Flight 1: Asghar-Ito def. Cowley's Sarah Frendo-Sara Petric, 6-1, 6-0;

Flight 2: Moore-Soli def. Cowley's Kasey Coker-Garduno, 6-1, 6-4;

Flight 3: Garibal-Michelle Walker def. Mississippi Gulf Coast's Sarah McMillan-Jasmine Sartin, 6-0, 6-0.

TJC has won 17 women's national championships, including four straight from 2010 to 2013.

The tournament continues through Thursday.
