For Tyler Junior College, a good start failed to produce a desirable result.

The Apache Ladies led in each game but lost to Panola in four, 31-29, 33-31, 26-30, 31-29, Monday night in conference volleyball action at Wagstaff Gymnasium.

TJC fell to 19-14 overall and 0-2 in league play, while 19th-ranked Panola is 20-7 and 1-2.

The Apache Ladies nearly squared the match as they led for much of the fourth game, including scores of 10-6, 17-11 and 29-28.

After a sideout, TJC lost serve when Panola blocked Pamela Arterberry's shot to tie the game at 29-29.

The Fillies won the next two points to close out the match. Michelle Manningham blocked TJC's Veronica Ogbeide to make it 30-29, and Lauren Secord of White Oak hit a kill cross-court to win it for Panola.

TJC extended the match by capturing the third game, 30-26.

Emmanuella Lastrucci, a freshman from France, served four points in a row to break a 25-25 tie, and Arterberry won the 30th point with a dink shot.

Overall, sophomore Tiny McHenry and Lastrucci led the Apache Ladies with 10 kills apiece. Ogbeide, a sophomore from Hurst, had a team-high 10 blocks. McHenry was next with nine blocks.

Leading the defensive effort were Haley Hatch, Frances Davies and Lastrucci, who combined for 59 digs. Hatch led with 21.

Lastrucci led TJC from the service line with nine aces, including three straight in the opening game as the Apache Ladies knotted the score at 29-29.

Panola stopped Lastrucci's service run when McHenry and Naomi Mays combined for a block that landed out of bounds. TJC was called for a violation on the next point to give Panola the opening game.

TJC returns to action Thursday at No. 13 Navarro, which already has a conference win over Panola.
