Behind a well-balanced overall performance, Tyler Junior College swept
North Central Texas College, 30-28, 30-16, 30-25, in non-conference
volleyball action at Wagstaff Gymnasium on Wednesday afternoon.
"I think we played really well today,"
said TJC head coach Dana Hatch. "I felt like our defense was good, and
we corrected some things upfront blocking that we have been working on
that made a big difference."
Some 400-plus Apache fans witnessed
as TJC's Erica Weden closed out the first game, taking to serve down
26-28. The Kerrville native served four aces to end game 1, which had
four late ties. Weden finished the game with six aces and nine digs.
Veronica
Ogbeide pummeled four of her nine kills in the opener while Tina
McHenry slammed back-to-back kills for two of her seven kills on the
night.
An eight-point service run by Pittsburg graduate Nyeshia Aldridge turned a back-and-forth start in game 2 into a 14-6 TJC lead.
Teammates
Frances Davies of Granbury and Haley Hatch of Fort Worth pumped out
five-point service runs to finish out the 30-16 game 2 final.
Six ties and four lead changes highlighted the game with TJC trailing 15-16.
Hatch
took over the service duties one-point down and turned around a 20-16
Lady Apaches lead. TJC never trailed again as Pamela Arterberry
finished with nine kills and Emmanuelle Lastrucci of France added to
her eight-kill total.
Davies led TJC with 13 digs as the Lady Apaches improve to 18-12 on the season, and NCTCC drops to 7-9.
TJC
next hosts Richland College on Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Wagstaff
Gymnasium. The Lady Apaches open conference play next Monday on the
road against fourth-ranked Blinn College at 6 p.m
