COFFEYVILLE, Kan. -- The No. 14 Tyler Junior College Apaches suffered their first season-opening loss to a Kansas school after four consecutive wins.

Coffeyville Community College scored on its first offensive play Saturday night and never trailed in defeating the Apaches, 27-10, at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The game was part of the annual challenge between the Southwest Junior College Football Conference and the Kansas Jayhawk league. This was TJC's first meeting with Coffeyville in the past five years.

The Apaches (0-1) were hurt by two big plays. Stephen Alfred's 55-yard punt return for a touchdown was called back by a penalty early in the fourth quarter. Instead, No. 18 Coffeyville preserved a 20-10 lead.

The other key play occurred midway through the fourth quarter when TJC quarterback Luke Halpin was picked off by Nu'Keese Richardson after reaching the Coffeyville 9-yard line.

The Apaches went three-and-out to start the game, but they were unable to punt the ball. Under heavy rush, Jorge Martinez tucked the ball and ran but was stopped well short of a first down.

On the next play, Coffeyville quarterback Cayden Cochran ran 21 yards for a touchdown. The Red Ravens (1-0) had a 13-0 lead before Martinez kicked a 32-yard field goal to make it 13-3.

Coffeyville countered with a long touchdown pass with 20 seconds left in the first half to go up 20-3 at the intermission.

TJC scored on a long drive in the third quarter, capped by a Halpin 5-yard TD pass to former Lufkin standout Quinn Trimble.

The Apaches play their home opener next Saturday against Kilgore College at Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium. The kickoff is 7 p.m.
